Why Summer is the BEST for Family Photos!

I know that the thought of family photos can sometimes feel like another thing on the to-do list. But as a Kansas City-area family photographer, I often find that summer offers the perfect opportunity for relaxed, easy, and fun sessions.

Here in the Midwest, our summers are HOT, but those evenings when the sun gets low are truely magic and it’s a fantastic time to document your family's story. Let me share a few reasons why a summer session might just be a wonderful choice for your crew:

1. Flexible Schedules

Summer often means a welcome shift from rigid routines. With kids out of school, you might find more breathing room in your schedule, making it easier to find that perfect photo slot. Those long summer evenings also offer the most beautiful light, providing a soft, dreamy glow for your photos without needing to start super early.

2. Summer Styles

Summer is the season for light, breezy fabrics and comfortable outfits. Think flowy sundresses, shorts, light linen, and even bare feet. When everyone is comfortable and feeling good in what they're wearing, it directly translates to more genuine smiles and relaxed interactions in your photos.

3. Warm Weather

If the chance of chilly weather or bundling up for outdoor photos makes you shiver, summer is absolutely your season. The warmth allows everyone to relax and enjoy being outdoors without the distraction of being cold.

Considering Summer Photos?

Summer offers a unique blend of convenience, comfort, and beautiful light that can make your family photo experience truly enjoyable. If you're thinking about documenting this season with your loved ones, I'm here to help make it happen!

What's in My Camera Bag

I posted a reel on Instagram that showed my camera gear and had lots of responses and questions. This is my follow-up on what gear I use.

For anyone just starting out, it’s easy to view all these and get overwhelmed! Know that I’ve collected these over almost 10 years.

*Also, I made this list before adding a new Mirrorless Camera, the Nikon Z6ii. I’m excited to add this to my camera bag and have begun using it! I will share more details about why I bought this new camera and what I love about it later. :)

I shoot all Nikon cameras/lenses.

Here’s what I take to every Family, Engagement, Portrait Session, et…
-Nikon D750 body x2
-35mm 1.4
-85mm 1.4
-50mm 1.4
-60mm MACRO

My favorite camera bag, The Daniela from Kelly Moore

And here is what I add for wedding days-

-80-200mm 2.8
-Lots of Flashes, Triggers, batteries, memory cards, and lots of little extra things, just in case!

All in my other favorite camera backpack from Langly (linked is a newer version, plus I got a great black Friday deal)
